Provider Notice: Cultural Competency & Health Outcomes Toolkit

Aetna Better Health of Texas (ABHTX) is committed to partnering with our provider network to support equitable, person-centered care for our STAR, STAR Kids, CHIP, and CHIP Perinate members. As part of that commitment, we are sharing our Cultural Competency & Health Outcomes Toolkit for Providers to help strengthen culturally responsive care, improve communication, and support better health outcomes across the communities you serve.

This toolkit includes practical education and resources for providers and office staff, including free CME/CEU opportunities, health equity and cultural competency tools, and guidance to help practices identify and address cultural and linguistic needs. It is designed to support everyday workflows, from front desk interactions and appointment scheduling to clinical encounters, care planning, and follow-up communications, while reinforcing respectful, understandable, and timely care.

What’s included in the toolkit

  • Free CME/CEU training options to support ongoing professional development
  • Resources and tools to support culturally competent and equitable care
  • Practice tips to improve health literacy and strengthen patient understanding
  • Guidance to help staff recognize and respond to cultural and linguistic needs
  • Information on no-cost language assistance services available for ABHTX members

We encourage all practitioners and office staff (including scheduling, registration, clinical, billing, and care coordination teams) to review the toolkit. Practices may also incorporate the toolkit into new staff onboarding and annual training activities.

Next steps for your practice

  1. Review the attached Cultural Competency & Health Outcomes Toolkit and share it with staff who interact with ABHTX members.
  2. Complete a free CME/CEU offering included in the toolkit and consider incorporating it into annual training.
  3. Review internal workflows for identifying language needs, communicating in plain language, and documenting member preferences when applicable.
  4. Use the language assistance guidance in the toolkit when interpretation or translation support is needed for ABHTX members.

If you have questions or would like support applying these resources within your practice, please contact your assigned Provider Engagement Representative or email ABHTXProviderEngagement@aetna.com
